What does it take to win the Loveland Loves Barbecue cook-off? Practice, spices and a lot of fun.
Chefs and barbecue enthusiasts clapped and cheered each other on as the winners of the third annual event were announced Saturday
afternoon.
More than 40 contestants from across the country competed this weekend in downtown Loveland.
Lisa and Rooster Roberts of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and their barbecue team, Florida Skin and Bones, were named the overall winners of the
competition. Florida Skin and Bones had the top overall rating for their combined scores in the chicken, pork ribs, pork and brisket categories.
They also placed in the side dish and anything goes categories.
Lisa Roberts was ecstatic after being named winner and jumped into the arms of her son, Cody.
“We’re excited,” she said. “It’s really fun to be here in Colorado.”
The Florida Skin and Bones team travels across the country to compete and has won several awards, including a world championship in 2005
for their ribs.
Rooster Roberts said his secret is his Southern spice recipes, thrown on the meat “like a dust.” But he attributed Skin and Bones’ success to the
“good luck shot” he and his team had at 11 a.m. The tradition began two years ago, when he was asked to join the Rocky Mountain BBQ
Association.
“You turn in your food at noon, so you take a shot at 11 for good luck,” he said. “The whiskey shot does it.”
While some contestants such as the Robertses have been cooking for years, other winners are just beginning their barbecue careers.
